Spring is the season of rebirth, which makes it a great time to fix up your yard and replant for the season ahead. Use this guide and you’ll be on your way to a lush, inviting yard that will be envied by the neighborhood.
- Rake away debris and dead vegetation. Not only does this task clear your yard to make work easier, but it also enhances airflow through the loosened soil.
- Mow the grass short (between two to four inches) and maintain that length throughout the season.
- Use a rake or till to break up the soil in bare spots. Add peat moss to promote fresh growth where there once was none.
- Weed the yard, either by hand or using a non-selective herbicide on problem areas only. If you choose to use yard chemicals, wear long pants, long sleeves, boots and gloves to protect your skin.
- Wait several days for the weeds to die and then rake the areas to remove the debris.
- Mix grass seeds in with fresh soil and reseed the yard with extra focus on bare spots or areas with weak grass growth.
- Water the new seeds thoroughly. Saturating your yard a few times per week, as opposed to using smaller amounts of water every day, trains the grass roots to grow deeper into the soil for thicker and stronger grass growth.
- Plant the seasonal flowers and shrubs of your preference and mulch the flowerbeds to help lock in moisture and protect the fragile roots.
- Scrub out the bird bath, fill up the bird feeders and add your favorite yard decorations.
